Curmudgeon

I can tell I'm getting old. I am so annoyed by the outgoing messages that many young people have on their mobile phones, these days, tricking you into thinking that they're actually picking up:

Hello?

Oh, hey. What's up?

Oh, nuthin'. What are you doing right now?

Yeah, yeah.

. . . Nah, just kidding. It ain't really me. Leave a message! (beep).

RRRRRR!

my machine used to say:

"this is quin's machine. i do not check the machine. it's part of the phone package, so, i'm stuck with it. do not leave a message. i do not check them. call back or call my cell. do not leave a message. ever. bye."

do you know how many times the machine filled up with messages that went:

"oh, i hope you check your machine and get my message!"

gargh.

I used to have a friend of mine, whose voice was amazingly similar to Barry White's, record my outgoing message. It would say something like, "Golf Widow's tied up right now, but leave a message and she'll call you back, as soon as I untie her."

Oy vey, Quin! What about your cell phone, not that I ever call . . . ?

Golfwidow, you LIKE it rough, don't'cha? If I had called and heard that outgoing message, it would make me picture you tossing your long, lustrous locks in slow motion, a la Denise Richards in her guest appearance on 'Friends.'
